At the end of August, young scientists from across the country and the world gathered at UW’s Friday Harbor Labs for our island-based “neuroscience summer camp.” Now in its 8th year, the Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain provides 2-week, intensive and immersive training based around newly emerging datasets from the Allen Institute and its partners. This year, we focused on an astonishing functional connectivity dataset that blends 2 photon imaging with EM connectomics, and a brand new, 300,000+ neuron neuropixels dataset from animals performing a rich behavioral task. Computational neuroscience lectures on sensory processing, coding, and neural population dynamics gave context and motivation for student projects, which were as inspiring as ever and ranged from single cell morphology to state space modeling. The course is jointly organized by the Allen Institute and the UW Computational Neuroscience Center.
Applications for SWDB 2023 will open in January. Interested trainees can sign up for more information at https://alleninstitute.org/what-we-do/brain-science/events-training/summer-workshop-dynamic-brain/
