Next Neuroscience, AI, and Society seminar: Living with an aging mind: Personal, philosophical and practical considerations

The CNC's next seminar in our Neuro, AI, and Society series will take place October 14, featuring a conversation between philosopher Noga Arikha and physician Barak Gaster. It will be held in Foege Auditorium with a reception to follow in Vista Cafe. Register at https://forms.gle/qgUHDUbpTafYzfo78   Dementia affects a significant fraction of the aging population. We host a conversation between physician Barak Gaster and philosopher of science Noga Arikha to discuss the experience of living with dementia and [...]

The Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain going strong in its 8th year

At the end of August, young scientists from across the country and the world gathered at UW’s Friday Harbor Labs for our island-based “neuroscience summer camp.” Now in its 8th year, the Summer Workshop on the Dynamic Brain provides 2-week, intensive and immersive training based around newly emerging datasets from the Allen Institute and its partners. This year, we focused on an astonishing functional connectivity dataset that blends 2 photon imaging [...]

Featured speakers at the 2022 Neural Computation and Engineering Connection

The CNC’s annual Neural Computation and Engineering Connection (NCEC) meeting will be returning this week (Thursday-Friday May 5-6) with both in-person and streaming attendance opportunities. In addition to a poster session, talks from undergraduate and graduate students and postdocs, and an ethics panel discussion, keynote speakers will highlight cutting-edge research in computational neuroscience. This year’s slate of speakers will highlight their distinct methodological and theoretical approaches to questions about the dynamics of neural [...]

BRAINS celebrates 10 years of building a diverse neuroscience community

For CNC faculty Sheri Mizumori, strengthening the diversity of the neuroscience community nationally isn’t just about recruitment, it’s about retention. The statistics on retention of underrepresented scientists are not promising – as you move up the hierarchy of academia, from undergraduates to graduate students to postdocs to early-career faculty to tenured faculty, representation of scientists from racial and ethnic minorities and scientists with disabilities decreases at each stage. Despite institutional calls for change, [...]

Research opportunity for pre-doctoral students at the interface of data and neuroscience

The UW Computational Neuroscience Center and the Shanahan Fellowship program have an exciting opportunity for a pre-doctoral researcher. Both undergraduate and postbac students will be considered. Students will gain hands-on research experience in neural computation, neural networks, and computational modeling/method development. Students will be mentored by current Shanahan fellows. The ideal candidate will have experience with: • Coding languages, especially Python • Machine learning and data science tools, such as scikit-learn • Neural networks, such [...]

A look back at the Computational Neuroscience Training Program

Over its 10 years, the CNC training program funded 16 graduate students and over 30 undergraduate students, providing research experience and education for aspiring computational neuroscientists. With the NIH-funded program having completed its cycle in 2020, we look back on the impact of the training program on its students. Diving into computational neuroscience Computational neuroscience, to undergraduate Chloe Winston, had long "looked interesting [and] sounded interesting." But before applying to the CNC's training [...]
